Pilot
- The U.S. Department of Defense's Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms defines a burn notice as: "an official statement by one intelligence agency to other agencies, domestic or foreign, that an individual or group is unreliable for any of a variety of reasons".
Old friends
- The Sandbar, Sam's favorite bar he says he can never go back to now that Michael caused such a ruckus, is a real bar in Coconut Grove (an artsy neighborhood of Miami).
- When Michael goes to the hotel where the assassin is staying, he comes out of the stairs on the fourth floor, but when he gets in the elevator it clearly says he's on the seventh floor (the one the assassin is supposedly staying on).
Family business
- This is the only Season 1, ep of the first season in which no yogurt appears or is mentioned.
- To get Ari's attention, Michael orders Fisher Vineyards Coach Insignia Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a real wine made by Fisher Vineyards, a small winery located in the Sonoma (CA) area.
Broken rules
- When Michael is shown just having come out of the shower still towelling off and talking on the phone with Sam, the waistband on his jeans is wet. In the few seconds it takes Michael and Fiona to begin fighting, they are dry.
- Michael enters Ernie's store and locks the door. However, when leaving, Michael leaves without unlocking the door.
Wanted man
- Sam chooses the cover name "Charles Finley" in this Season 1, ep. Charles Finley was the flamboyant and often controversial owner of the Kansas City Athletics, later to be known as the Oakland Athletics after moving the franchise.
Hard bargain
- Halliburton is an oil-services company that also provides construction and military support services.
False flag
- Fiona mentions that Sam's old bullet-proof jacket smells of "Old Spice and bourbon". As of 2007, Bruce Campbell, who plays Sam, does television adverts for Old Spice.
Dead drop
- In one scene after Cowan is shot, his blood disappears from Michael's shirt but not from Michael's jacket.
- The article in the first card Michael receives ("Belgrade Weapons Depot Destroyed") from Philip Cowan has several grammar problems; four in the following two sentences (which have been italicized): "For many years, the U. S. have spoken against the actions of groups who use acts of terrorism to intimidate government politics. Serbia has been plagued by terrorist who consider themselves as true loyalist.
Loose ends
- Sam's stunt double is visible when he and Michael are running down the ramp.
Turn and burn
- Steganography is a method of hiding a message within a message. The word steganography is of Greek origin and means "covered, or hidden writing".
Trust Me
- When Michael enters the Pakistani Consulate portraying a reporter, he is holding the 19 May Miami Herald (Headline: "McCain, Obama, Clinton target Florida").
- The alias Michael uses, Davis Cullen, references a real person: Cullen Davis. Davis was tried and acquitted for murdering his estranged wife's lover and her daughter as well as seriously injuring his wife Priscilla in 1976 when they lived in Fort Worth, Texas.
Scatter Point
- There are a number of continuity errors during the scene at the bar's forecourt: The champagne glasses disappear and move throughout shots; Sam's newspaper repeatedly changes hands; Also, a number of people in the background change positions repeatedly.
Bad Blood
- When Victor is explaining the plan to Michael where the plan will take place, you can see a hair (or similar) on the top right of the screen as the camera pans down at the beginning of their conversation.
Rough Seas
- When Michael pretends to shoot Virgil, he gets up close to him to do so. You'd think Gerard would notice that there was no blood on Michael after Michael shot Virgil considering the line of work Gerard is in and how close Michael was to Virgil when he fired his gun.
- When the thieves approach the boat, and Michael gets a gun from Gerard, he pulls back and releases the slide, thereby loading the chamber. When he then threatens Virgil with the gun, he does it again, but no bullet is thrown out of the chamber.
- When Gerard first threatens Michael with his gun, the clicking sound of the hammer being cocked is heard, while Gerard makes the according gesture. However, in the next cut the hammer is still in its original position.
- The character Virgil (played by Chris Ellis) is introduced as a former client. Michael previously helped him in the first season episode "Unpaid Debts".
Double Booked
- When Michael talks to Jeannie for the first time, she leaves a stain on his right shoulder. In the following shots, the stain disappears and reappears again.
Good Soldier
- As Michael is being chased by Carla at the end of the episode, he slides under a semi-truck to escape. Just prior to sliding under the truck, the camera's point of view changes so that it is directly behind Michael's head. At this point, you can see long brown hair (the stuntman's hair) coming from under the bottom edge of the helmet and covering his neck. Michael's hair is short and black.
- When Michael is being chased by Carla at the end of the episode, Michael slides under the semi truck, before he goes under you can see gloves on his hands, and while he is sliding they are also on, but when he stands up and looks at Carla they aren't on.
- When Michael rams Lesher's car with an SUV, in one of the frames the car is empty. In the following shots Lesher and his accomplice are still in the car, bruised because of the impact.
